Data served here is open data. All rights in it remain with the organisations that published it. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Some layers are © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL. Supported by National Energy SO Open Data.

What this site is

Citymirror is a read-and-presentation layer over public data. It does two things: it assesses cities against a published smart-city framework using evidence gathered from the open web, and it maps UK infrastructure by ingesting open government registers.

It does not generate the underlying data. Which datasets appear on a map, how they are grouped, and how often they refresh is curated by AI agents; the figures themselves come from the named publishers below and every layer links to its source.

Data, licences and ownership

The data served here is open data, and all rights in it remain with the organisations that published it. Nothing on this site transfers ownership of anyone else's data to Data Corridor Limited, or from us to you.

Four distinct things are involved, and they carry different licences:

1. Citymirror's own output — CC BY 4.0

The city assessments, scores, per-criterion findings and evidence links that Citymirror produces are licensed CC BY 4.0. You may use them commercially and non-commercially, including via the public API, with credit to "Citymirror" and a link to citymirror.io.

2. UK government registers — mostly Open Government Licence v3

Most infrastructure layers come from public bodies under the Open Government Licence v3, which permits commercial use and sub-licensing with attribution. Publishers include the Environment Agency, Natural England, NatureScot, Natural Resources Wales, Historic England, Historic Environment Scotland, Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (Planning Data Platform), Ordnance Survey, DESNZ, the Department for Transport, SEPA, JNCC and UKCEH.

Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Grid boundary layers are supplied by NESO and carry their own condition: Supported by National Energy SO Open Data.

Carbon storage, offshore hydrocarbon field and onshore well layers are supplied by the North Sea Transition Authority under the NSTA Open User Licence, which is a separate licence from the OGL and carries its own attribution condition.

Some layers carry their publisher's own open licence — the Crown Estate Open Data Licence, Crown Estate Scotland, the NESO Open Data Licence, the Northern Powergrid Open Data Licence, SSEN Distribution and Ofwat/Ordnance Survey under CC BY 4.0.

3. OpenStreetMap — ODbL, share-alike

Several layers are derived from OpenStreetMap and are © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence.

ODbL is share-alike. If you extract that data from this site and redistribute it as a database, your database must also be ODbL. Citymirror's CC BY 4.0 offer does not extend to OpenStreetMap-derived layers, because those are not ours to relicense.

This matters more since we began publishing the data store (below). A rendered map is a Produced Work under ODbL; a downloadable GeoParquet file is a Database, and the share-alike obligation attaches to it directly. 37 of the 159 layers in the store are OpenStreetMap-derived and carry that obligation; the other 122 do not. Every layer states which it is, and the store's LICENCE.md lists the affected layers by name.

4. The downloadable data store

The Dynamic map reads a public store of GeoParquet files, which anyone may fetch directly:

  • `/data/catalog.json` — every layer with its publisher, licence, coverage, fetch date and column list
  • `/data/LICENCE.md` — the licence terms for the store
  • /data/layers/<domain>/<layer>/data.parquet — the data itself

Publishing it this way is deliberate: the same figures the maps draw should be checkable and reusable without running our JavaScript. We claim no rights over the underlying data. Only the compilation, the schema and our annotations are ours, and those are CC BY 4.0. Each layer keeps its publisher's licence, and where that licence is share-alike, so is anything you build from it.

If you own data shown here

If you publish one of these datasets and believe it is used outside your terms, write to contact@datacorridor.io and we will correct or remove it. We have removed a dataset on exactly these grounds before.

Accuracy and disclaimers

The data is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. Data Corridor Limited makes no representation that it is accurate, complete or current, and accepts no liability for any loss arising from reliance on it.

Specifically:

  • Maps are for orientation, not for decisions with legal or safety consequences. Boundaries are simplified for national display. They show which land is designated; they are not the legal boundary, and they are not a substitute for a search, a survey, or the publisher's own record.
  • Absence of a feature is not evidence of absence. Volunteer-mapped layers are understated by nature, and registers only cover what their regulator licenses. Several layers cover England only, or Great Britain but not Northern Ireland; each map states its own coverage.
  • A site appearing on a register is not a finding about that site. A closed landfill on the historic landfill register was used for disposal; that is not a statement that it is contaminated today.
  • Assessments are evidence-based, not exhaustive. A criterion recorded as absent means no public evidence was found, which is not the same as the city not doing it.
  • Third-party data is refreshed periodically. The date each feed was last ingested is shown on the map; that is when we pulled it, not when the publisher last changed it.

Using the API

The public API and MCP endpoint are free and need no key. Please cache responses and keep request rates reasonable. We may rate-limit or block usage that degrades the service for others. Endpoints and response shapes may change.

Do not use this site or its API to break the law, to infringe a third party's rights, or in any way that breaches the licences above.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Data Corridor Limited excludes liability for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, and loss arising from reliance on the data. Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Privacy

We record aggregate visit counts and the queries put to the search and MCP endpoints, in order to understand what the service is used for. We do not sell personal data. Sign-in, where offered, is handled by Firebase Authentication.

Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top is the last revision.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
